KPMG Australia has received the ISO 42001 certification, an international standard for artificial intelligence management (AIMS) as set by BSI.
Awarded by BSI, the ISO 42001 standard was introduced on 19 December 2023. It outlines the framework for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and improving AIMS within organisations.
It is one of the first globally recognised benchmarks for AI, administered by the International Organization for Standardization.
The international standard BS ISO/IEC 42001 helps organisations use AI responsibly. It focuses on issues like non-transparent automated decisions, using machine learning instead of human-coded logic, and systems that continuously learn and adapt.
KPMG introduced KymChat, a bespoke version of Chat GPT, to its staff in March 2023 and later to clients in July 2023.
In June 2024, KPMG Australia launched KymTax, a Gen AI tool for tax services that combines research, knowledge management, and content generation.

Following the launch of the ISO 42001 standard, KPMG Australia established a team in February 2024 to navigate the BSI certification process.
This initiative involved a comprehensive audit of the company’s governance, project management, and the integration of AI practices into daily operations.
BSI regulatory services president Manuela Gazzard said: “It’s fantastic to see KPMG Australia demonstrate the work they have done to ensure the safe and responsible use of AI and become the first in the world to achieve BSI’s certification to the AI management system standard. This is an important step forward and one that has the potential to empower other global organisations to responsibly manage their technology.”
In September 2024, KPMG Australia agreed to acquire Australia-based Chartertech to expand its technology and financial advisory capabilities.
