The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) has announced the departure of Sharron Gunn, following the decision to remove the chief operating officer (COO) role from its organisational structure.

In 2001, Gunn joined ICAEW as Technical Services and Product Development head.

She held various positions, including Member Services director in 2006, executive director in 2012, and then COO in 2021.

During her 23-year tenure, Gunn contributed to ICAEW’s growth, both domestically and internationally.

She played a role in developing and implementing new member support services and commercial initiatives.

Among her achievements were the overhaul of member facilities at Chartered Accountants’ Hall and the launch of the Academy of Professional Development.

Gunn was also an advocate for gender diversity in the accountancy profession.

She spearheaded several equality, diversity, and inclusion initiatives, including the Women in Leadership programme.

Additionally, she led Institute’s involvement in Rise, an initiative aimed at enhancing social mobility by equipping young people with essential business skills.

ICAEW Board chair Peter Wyman said: “While ICAEW is saddened to see Sharron depart, the ICAEW Board extends its sincere gratitude to Sharron for her extensive and impactful contributions to the organisation over the past 23 years. She leaves behind an impressive legacy.”

Last month, ICAEW introduced a new category within its technology accreditation scheme, focusing on client communications.

ClientWindow, launched in the Channel Islands, is the first solution to achieve accreditation in this category.

Founded in 1880, ICAEW now represents more than 202,000 members and students globally, as well as supervises and monitors around 12,000 companies.
