JEAN STEPHENS, GLOBAL CEO OF RSM INTERNATIONAL comments on the organisation’s approach to employee feedback on the new realities of remote and hybrid working
RSM, as part of our digital strategy and strategic business resilience planning, had been preparing to enable remote collaboration and ensure business continuity was maintained for every eventuality. With the onset of the pandemic, this resilience planning was activated almost overnight and saw RSM’s business operations fully digitised. a year later, sees our Member Firms and the wider RSM organisation continue to grow and deliver excellent client service, dispelling any historic assumptions around presenteeism and the idea that great work can only be done from the office.
The societal shift towards remote working has been underway for years due to changes in talent expectations of new generations, enhanced technology and automation, a focus on diversity and a greater need for flexibility within the workforce. However, there is no doubt that COVID-19 dramatically accelerated this shift and as a result has opened the minds of many to embracing new ways of working.
Many of our colleagues have enjoyed the flexibility and independence that comes with remote working, while others are keen to mix with their colleagues again and hold face-to-face meetings with clients. As employers, the onus is on us to listen to the voices and expectations of the talent within our workforce and create frameworks that consider the diverse wishes and needs of all colleagues. As a large, global organisation we are cognisant that different markets have different cultures and each Member Firm has the autonomy to decide what works best for them and their people. What is consistent throughout RSM, however, is that we are excited to meet and collaborate with our clients and teams in person again as soon as it is safe to resume face-to-face meetings and interactions within the office.
From the perspective of the RSM Global Executive Office, we are reimagining our physical premises as a more collaborative space where teams can have discussions, generate ideas and innovate. While this year continues to be one of disruption and change, we are steadfast in continuing to invest in our people and finding new ways of working and collaborating to create a rich working experience in a virtual world – and ultimately to help our clients through their own change and transformation. Indeed, many of our most exciting innovations have been accelerated by the remote working situation caused by the pandemic.
For RSM, what matters most is not the location from which we work, but rather it is about what best inspires our people, protects their wellbeing, and helps us continue to build and nurture the deep relationships we have with our people, our clients and with each other.
